  • Enrichment, grade 1

Our theme is "The Magical World of the Fairy Tale.”
Our theme takes us deep into the rich and magical world of the fairy tale. We start by reading traditional tales like The Three Little Pigs, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, as well as some light-hearted modern versions of these classics like The Three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig, Sleeping Bobby and Cinder Edna. Students analyze and compare similarities and differences between these stories. They engage in fun projects related to our themes.
Through writer’s workshop, dramatizations and written and illustrated responses, students gain further appreciation of the literature and enhance language. We engage in discussions about the elements of a story that make up a fairy tale like character, setting, plot, and a lesson or a moral. We come to understand the ideas of a hero and a villain, dynamics between characters, a beginning, middle and an end, and things that come in threes, all while reflecting on and writing responses to questions and writing prompts.
Mathematically, students are given opportunities to practice addition and subtraction skills using various games and manipulatives. Other concepts, such as patterning, counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, geometry, graphing and fractions are explored in this playful environment.

The power of the story is in full force in this engaging class. Remember to bring your wand and you dynamic imagination!
